The Gemstone Collector by Alex Michael (Now on KU!)

In Pluiventez, power is measured in magic and magic is found in gemstones hidden deep beneath the earth. Only one person has the ability to find the most rare precious gemstones.

Zephyr Tanisen was just eight years old when war tore her world and family apart. The magical Algemerics and the human settlers clashed over land, power and magic, leaving Zephyr orphaned and caught between both worlds. Ten years later, she is known as The Gemstone Collector, a girl with a photographic memory so precise she can recall every ancient map etched into forbidden tomes, and every gemstone buried in the ground.

Both humans and Algemerics want her. Not for who she is, but for what she can do. She is so over being used.

When she is rescued from a deadly faniten (a beast that kills humans for sport) by the handsome Algemeric Holdrent, Zephyr finds herself thrown into a dangerous game of politics, power, and hidden agendas. With her loyal best friends Clarice and Lewis at her side, Zephyr must decide who to trust: Dagon, the calculating leader of the human army who offers her protection, family and a father figure, or Holdrent, whose mysterious past and quiet intensity both infuriate her and draw her in.

As tensions between humans and Algemerics reach a boiling point, Zephyr begins to unlock a deeper, long-dormant magic inside her, one that could stop the war before it starts or ignite something far worse. Caught between two worlds, two leaders, and a slow-burning connection she never expected, Zephyr must choose her path and who she will become before Pluiventez burns again.
